Leather Fresh Dye Kit

This repair kit is ideal for repairing scratches, abrasions or slight fading on leather furniture or leather car seats.

Contents

  • 1 x Leather Fresh Dye, 150 ml
  • 1 x Leather Cleaner, 125 ml
  • 1 x Leather Protector, 150 ml
  • 1 x Sponge for cleaning
  • 1 x Sponge for applying fresh dye
  • 1 x Polishing Cloth
  • 1 x Protective Glove

First, clean the leather thoroughly before refreshing the colour or the application of care products. Use COLOURLOCK Mild Leather Cleaner for normal degrees of soiling but, for more serious soiling, you will need COLOURLOCK Strong Leather Cleaner. Cleaning prior to treatment prevents dirt sticking on the leather's surface during colour or care. Our COLOURLOCK Leather Cleaning Brush will remove soiling from the depths of the grain (for best results, use a circular motion in all directions). You can also use the cleaning sponge contained in this kit.

After cleaning or, in the case of recently treated or oily leather, de-grease it using COLOURLOCK Leather Degreaser (not contained in the kit).

Once the surface has been prepared, apply COLOURLOCK Leather Fresh to revitalise the leather's original colour on scratches, abrasions or slight fading (which are often found in vehicle seat side bolsters and furniture sitting areas). The colour can be prepared according to our colour chart or send us a leather sample by post and we will mix it for you (an additional charge will apply for mixing colour according to a sample).

To maintain the top surface, we recommend our COLOURLOCK Leather Protector. It contains antioxidants, that stop the leather's decay, and UV filters to protect the surfaces from colour fading. It will also make the leather soft and supple once again.

Application

Always test any products first in a hidden area for changes or to confirm colour matching!

COLOURLOCK Leather Cleaner

The Leather Cleaner is provided in a foam dispenser bottle. Foams clean the leather more efficiently than liquid agents, the consumption is considerably smaller, and the leather does not become wet, which could otherwise lead to hardening after drying.

The Leather Cleaner gently cleans all kinds of nappa leather. Apply some foam on the Cleaning Sponge and proceed with cleaning the leather. Remove dirty foam with a slightly moist cloth.

COLOURLOCK Leather Fresh Dye

After a pre-cleaning with the COLOURLOCK Strong Leather Cleaner (which has a slight re-greasing property) and in case of oily spots, de-grease the leather additionally with COLOURLOCK Leather Degreaser.

Wait 1 to 3 hours for the cleaner to dry.

Apply the colour after the cleaner has dried.

Use a sponge to apply the colour evenly on the respective surfaces, working from seam to seam. Dry afterwards with a hair dryer. On small spots, one application is sufficient. Only treat surfaces where colour change is needed! If high opacity is desired, apply the colour in several layers and dry in-between layers with a hair dryer.

COLOURLOCK Leather Protector

Wait 24 hrs for cleaning or colouring products to dry completely. Use COLOURLOCK Leather Protector as soon as the leather has dried after cleaning or colour refreshment, ideally on the following day.

Apply with a soft cloth and let dry without polishing afterwards. One application is sufficient. Strained surfaces (heavy use or in sunlit areas) should be treated every three months. Clean before in case of soiling!

Tips and tricks for the application of Leather Fresh Dye!

  • Always check first in the concealed area whether the color also fits correctly before you continue to work on large areas.
  • Leather Dye is only suitable for recoloring small areas!
  • Leather Dye is a color refresher for damaged areas. At most, damaged areas are color refreshed from seam to seam. Healed surfaces will not be improved by color refreshing. Only clean and maintain such surfaces.
  • Leather Dye can also be applied with a spray gun. The result is then more even, especially on very large surfaces.
  • Unevenly applied Leather Dye can be evened out with the Leather Sanding Pad before applying another coat.
  • Different Leather Fresh colors can be mixed with each other for color matching. However, you need a good color sense to do this.
  • For localized touch-ups, Leather Dye can also be applied to synthetic leathers and plastics.
  • Always dry the Leather Dye with a hair dryer. It speeds up the process immensely. If you let it dry without a hair dryer, you usually smear the previously applied layers.
  • Always work only at normal room temperatures! Especially in cold temperatures, the Leather Dye does not dry well enough, and working in clammy temperatures is no fun.
  • Take enough time for the work. Color refreshing of leather can only be done quickly by professionals. If you take your time, you will get better results.
  • For selective filigree work, Leather Dye can be applied with a mini-brush.
  • Particular care must be taken with seams that differ in color! These can be masked with masking tape for protection.

Professional Results from a Non-Professional

I ordered the repair kit consisting of mild cleaner, color repair and leather conditioner. The kit came with 2 sponge applicators and protective glove for applying the color dye to the leather surface. My project was my 2008 BMW interior which has begun losing color on sections of the seats and armrest over the past 10 years. Before starting, I cut both sponges in the kit in half - each measured 1” square by 2” long - making 4 1” cube applicators after cutting. My seats are perforated leather for A/C venting so I was careful to apply 4-5 very light coats as not to fill in the perforations. I followed the directions and couldn’t be happier with the results. I’m very picky with these things and I’m very please with the outcome. Follow the directions and apply thin coats of the product as you go. These are the results that I would expect if I had taken it to a professional upholstery shop.

Perfect

Contact the company directly for a color swatch. Even though the swatches are printed on regular paper, it is very helpful.

Kit needs the neutral binder

This is a good kit for even fairly torn up leather. It really should include a bottle of their neutral binder. The binder is used to stabilize a surface with a lot of little cracks. Every repair I’ve done needed some of the neutral binder, as it’s used right after cleaning and in some cases areas shouldn’t be clean order the neutral binder before you start your project.

Not as good as I expected

I used this product to clean 2 sofas and dye some peeled areas on them. My sofas were really dirty and the mild leather cleaner did a good job cleaning the leather, but after finishing the first sofa, I only had about a quarter of the bottle left to clean the second sofa.I was quite disappointed with the leather dye, I thought I could use it to dye several peeled spots and add a coat on the rest to enhance the color. It was not very good on peeled spots, the dye was too runny and there just wasn’t enough dye thickness in the liquid. I had to put at least 15 coats on peeled spots in order to blend them with the rest of the leather. Also it has been about 1 month since I applied the dye and some dyed spots are already showing cracks.
