The COLOURLOCK® GLUE-TEX backlining cloth is a practical tool for stabilizing rips and holes in leather. The cloth has an adhesive side which is activated by heat and is available in black or white. The following scopes of use are possible:

• The cloth can be ironed onto the reverse side of leather or vinyl in order to stabilize it. The reverse has to be accessible, or the leather must be heated from above in a controlled manner.

• The cloth may also be ironed onto the obverse of leather or vinyl and subsequently be covered using Filler or Fluid Leather.

• In case of especially weak leather, the cloth can be ironed on both ways. After glueing on the reverse, the tear or hole should be filled and stabilized with Filler or Fluid Leather.

How to use: First, cut the cloth into a fitting size. The overlap should sufficiently stabilize the area of damage. The cloth has a sticker with marks the adhesive side. Please pay attention to which side is which when you cut the cloth; marking the adhesive one with a sticker or pen might be helpful.

Clean the leather or vinyl with GLD Solvent. In most cases, the surface will become sticky which is beneficial for the adhesion of the cloth. Apply the cloth and iron it onto the item at medium or high temperature. Keep the iron in motion to avoid punctual heat spikes. The cloth's adhesion may be tested with a finger; it usually takes only a few attempts to assess the right temperature and mode of procedure.

Finally, spread Filler or Fluid Leather over the cloth and cover the edges. The surface can be pre-structured by dabbing the products on with a sponge. In case of strong grain in the material, this kind of repairs tends to remain more visible.
Saving an ancient leather using GLUE-TEX Cloth and Filler.
