Vachetta leather bags – how to get a grip on care and stain removal

Beautiful, luxurious and aspirational aptly describe the high-end handbag and luggage range from brands such as Louis Vuitton and Coach. Their distinctive look is often enhanced by the use of vachetta leather for handles and trimmings.

What is vachetta leather? The name originates from the French for cattle, vache. It’s generally used to describe untreated Italian leather made from the hide of a bull’s shoulder. New vachetta leather is a light beige colour but it gradually turns dark brown with use. This process, known as patina, is due to grease and natural oils from hands, as well as exposure to sunlight.

The advantage is that the leather will develop its own unique characteristics as no two bags will age in the same way. Also the dark patina is proof that a Louis Vuitton bag is the genuine article, whereas a plastic imitation will remain the same colour.

Handle with care

Because vachetta leather is untreated it doesn’t need much maintenance. In fact cleaning would damage it. That’s the good news. The bad news is that vachetta is, like aniline leather, highly susceptible to staining.

To get a handle on care, prevention is the best strategy. It is advisable, where possible, not to put bags on the floor or near dirty surfaces. When not in use, tuck any straps inside the bag and store in a box or cotton dust bag. Avoid plastic bags, as the leather needs to breathe.

More intensive stains, particularly caused by water and other liquids, are much harder to deal with. Because vachetta is untreated, there is nothing to prevent stains penetrating all the way through. Treatment with water-based cleaners often leaves stains visible.
